More than a game.
Scholastic esports turns a passion students already have into a coached, accountable team experience built around communication, strategy, leadership, technology, and school pride.
Two complete seasons. One Mustang program.
Fall and Spring are separate competitive seasons. Students practice, prepare with teammates, play scheduled opponents, and work toward a playoff berth under school supervision and a shared Code of Conduct.
Spring Season
$100The $100 activity fee and signed student/parent Code of Conduct are required for each season. The form is available during activity payment.
A game for every kind of competitor.
Our lineup spans strategy, sports, racing, fighting, and team-based games. Students can identify the title and role that best fits their skills, interests, and preferred style of teamwork.
Participation matters. Some titles require a complete roster. A game may not be offered every season when there are not enough eligible players to field a full team.
Be ready at school—and ready to play from home.
Equipment depends on the game. Ponderosa provides internet at school and has PlayStations, Switch 2 systems, and PCs available, but every player must also be prepared for the platform, account, game license, and home connection required by their team.
Students competing in Mario Kart, Pokémon UNITE, Splatoon 3, or Super Smash Bros. must bring a personal Nintendo Switch 2 for play at school and have it available for matches at home.
Each League player needs a personal Windows PC or Mac capable of running the current game, a Riot account, and dependable home internet.
School internet is provided. Students still need stable home broadband in case snow, a school closure, or another schedule change moves practices or matches online. Wired Ethernet is strongly recommended when possible.

Nintendo Switch Online
The standard U.S. individual plan is currently $19.99 per year before tax; a family plan is $34.99 per year. It is needed for online play in paid Nintendo titles used by the program. Check Nintendo's current plans.
PlayStation Plus
Most purchased PS4 and PS5 games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer. Most free-to-play games do not. The Essential tier includes online multiplayer; pricing and plan terms can change. Check PlayStation's current plans.
Xbox online multiplayer
Paid Xbox games require a Game Pass plan that includes online console multiplayer. Free-to-play online games can generally be played without a paid membership. Check Xbox's current plans.
Before joining a roster, every family should confirm:
The assigned device and game edition • a personal or licensed copy of each paid game • the student's game and platform accounts • any required online subscription • a compatible controller, keyboard/mouse, and headset • enough storage for updates • reliable home internet and, when possible, an Ethernet cable or adapter.
Please ask before buying. Game editions, supported platforms, cross-play rules, subscription prices, and league requirements can change. The coach will confirm the exact platform for each roster. Platform guidance is based on current publisher information and PlayVS high-school title listings.
Built to reach the postseason.
Ponderosa students compete in a statewide field and have built a sustained record of success.
Students find their team—and build skills that travel.
The value is not simply the game. It is the structure surrounding it: teammates, adult mentorship, scheduled practice, academic and behavior expectations, shared goals, feedback, and meaningful responsibility.
Connection can be the first win.
Esports often reaches students who have not joined traditional activities. Gaming becomes a supervised, face-to-face team experience where students form friendships, represent their school, and discover that their strengths matter.
Talent is not enough.
Players coordinate roles, share information, adjust strategy, support teammates, and learn that a well-communicating team can outperform stronger individuals.
More ways to lead.
Captains, mentors, analysts, broadcasters, technicians, and organizers practice reliability, teaching, composure, and service.
Technology becomes practical.
Hardware, networking, troubleshooting, streaming, data analysis, production, cybersecurity, and game design become real areas of exploration.
Learn, adjust, return.
Coached competition teaches students to manage frustration, review mistakes without blame, adapt plans, and improve through deliberate practice.
Recognized school achievement.
Students can meet Ponderosa’s lettering requirements and earn an esports letter multiple times—an achievement that belongs on transcripts, résumés, and college applications.
No small division. No easy bracket.
Approximately 180 Colorado high schools compete. Unlike many traditional sports split into classifications and divisions, scholastic esports competes in one broad statewide league.
That means a Ponderosa roster can face programs of every size. Reaching the playoffs requires sustained performance through a deep and varied field—making 12 consecutive playoff seasons an especially meaningful accomplishment.
Competition can become college opportunity.
College esports includes varsity teams, clubs, junior colleges, recruiting profiles, academic programs, and operational roles. Scholarships are competitive and never guaranteed, but organized high-school experience gives students verified results, coach references, leadership stories, and portfolio material.
Colleges offering esports scholarships
NACE reports more than 260 colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada with esports scholarship opportunities. Awards range from book stipends to larger tuition packages.
2026 PlayVS Cup scholarships
The announced 2026 national competition included more than $50,000 in higher-education scholarship prizes across multiple game titles.
One special scholarship competition
A 2025 PlayVS partnership with RPI and Epic Games offered a combined $300,000 in RPI-specific Rocket League scholarship prizes—an example of how large individual opportunities can become.
Mustangs in competition and community.
From the Ponderosa lab to live championship stages and recruiting events, esports gives students a place to compete, travel, represent their school, and build memories with teammates.

What families should know.
A responsible program balances competition with academics, health, conduct, and realistic expectations.
Is this just more screen time?
Students are already interested in gaming. Scholastic esports moves that interest into a scheduled, supervised team with coaching, accountability, communication, and clear stopping times.
Does a student need to be highly ranked?
Not always. Teams value communication, attendance, coachability, composure, and reliability. Programs also need analysts, broadcasters, designers, technicians, and leaders.
Will every listed game run each season?
No. Some titles require a full roster. Offerings depend on eligible participation numbers and league scheduling.
Is a college scholarship guaranteed?
No. Most awards are partial and competitive. Strong academics, conduct, teamwork, rank, leadership, and program fit all matter.
How does the program support wellness?
Healthy esports should protect sleep, include movement breaks, teach ergonomics and hydration, set reasonable practice limits, and keep academics first.
Can students letter?
Yes. Students who meet Ponderosa’s participation, varsity, leadership, broadcast, technical, or marketing requirements can earn an esports letter—and can letter multiple times.
